In this course the student will learn basic skills in how to assist individuals with their personal grooming, dressing, bathing and the universal precautions designed to both protect the healthcare worker and patient. Also, in providing assistance with housekeeping, laundry services, shopping for food, preparing and serving meals, snacks, running errands and other household requirements.

This course provides a foundational understanding of the long-term care environment, focusing on the unique needs of individuals requiring extended care. Students will explore the roles and responsibilities of nursing assistants within the care team, legal and ethical considerations, communication strategies, and the importance of holistic and culturally competent care. Through a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills, learners will be equipped to support the well-being and dignity of residents, facilitate effective communication, ensure safety, and contribute positively to the care team. Additionally, this course addresses personal and professional development opportunities, including job search strategies, conflict management, and stress management, to prepare students for successful careers in long-term care.

This course is designed to introduce students to the fundamental concepts of human anatomy and physiology, emphasizing the structure and function of various organ systems. This course offers an overview of the body’s main systems, including the integumentary, musculoskeletal, digestive, cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous, urinary, reproductive, immune, and endocrine systems. Students will explore the basic anatomy of cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems, and learn about the physiological processes that enable the body to function. Students will gain insights into the common diseases affecting each system, focusing on those frequently diagnosed and treated in medical office settings. By the end of this course, students will have acquired a solid foundation in anatomy and physiology, preparing them for more advanced studies and their future roles as patient care technicians.

This course aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to master the medical terminology used in healthcare settings. Through engaging lectures and interactive learning activities students will explore the origin, structure, and function of medical terms, including prefixes, suffixes, root words, and abbreviations. Emphasis will be placed on terminology related to anatomy, physiology, pathological conditions, diagnostic procedures, and treatment protocols across various medical specialties. By the end of this course, students will have developed the ability to understand, pronounce, spell, and use medical terms confidently, enhancing their communication skills and professional competence in patient care environments.

This course integrates lessons on rehabilitation and restorative care, assisting with mobility and exercise, understanding and caring for prosthetic devices, assisting with range of motion exercises, and guidelines for bladder and bowel retraining. Emphasizing both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, the course prepares students to provide compassionate, competent care, promoting patients’ independence and recovery. Through lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on practice, students will learn to support patients in their rehabilitation journey, ensuring dignity and enhancing quality of life.

This course focuses on the development of critical personal care skills necessary for assisting patients effectively in a healthcare setting. This course covers key areas such as personal hygiene, skin care, mobility assistance, dressing, grooming, oral hygiene, and safe patient transfer and positioning techniques. Emphasizing both theoretical understanding and practical application, the course prepares students to perform a wide range of patient care tasks with competence, empathy, and respect for patient dignity.

This course provides comprehensive training in basic cardiac arrhythmia interpretation and telemetry. It focuses on developing the skills required to accurately identify and interpret common cardiac arrhythmias and utilize telemetry equipment effectively in clinical settings. The course blends theoretical knowledge with practical application, ensuring students are well-prepared to meet the demands of the healthcare environment.

This course offers an introduction to various diagnostic imaging procedures, safety issues and safety precautions for personnel and patients related to radiation treatments, the electrocardiogram procedure (EKG), a representation of the electrical events of the cardiac cycle and a distinctive waveform. Students will learn how to perform an EKG test and will cover conditions that are frequently first diagnosed and treated in a medical office setting.

This course will teach students current phlebotomy practice procedures, documentation, standards for venipuncture procedure, infectious diseases and protocol for special equipment usage with emphasis in accident prevention. Also, hematological studies including blood chemistry and microscopic examinations will also be discussed. Students will be introduced to the physical, chemical and microscopic examinations of urine, confirmatory tests, including pregnancy and ovulation. Microbiology will familiarize the student with microbial cell structure and functions, pathogenic and nonpathogenic organisms, the infection process, body’s immune responses and the proper techniques in the collection of bacterial and viral specimens.

This 30-hour class provides the student with a basic overview of the mental health issues affecting all of our society today. The student will be able to acquire the basic knowledge and skills, to work as a support with a mental health multidisciplinary team.

Students will be placed in facilities such as hospitals, ALF, rehabilitation centers, home health agencies, nursing homes, hospices and nursing care facilities. These (60) externship hours are mandatory and must be completed prior to graduation.
